Penicillin-resistant Streptococcus Pneumoniae
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of pneumonia, meningitis, septicemia, acute otitis media, and other serious infections, severely affecting infants, young children, and the elderly. In the past, S. pneumoniae was uniformly susceptible to penicillin, which remained the drug of choice for serious infections. However, since the mid-1960s, resistance to penicillin, which was first reported...
متن کاملEpidemiological relationships among penicillin non-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae strains recovered in the Czech Republic.
Since 1986, penicillin non-susceptible pneumococci (PNSP) have been found in the Czech Republic. As documented by a nationwide study, the proportion of invasive strains with reduced susceptibility to penicillin has fluctuated around 5 % in the past decade. Although the level of resistance to penicillin remains stable, the contribution of different capsular serotypes among the PNSP population va...
متن کاملHeteroresistance to penicillin in Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Heteroresistance to beta-lactam antibiotics has been mainly described for staphylococci, for which it complicates diagnostic procedures and therapeutic success. This study investigated whether heteroresistance to penicillin exists in Streptococcus pneumoniae. Population analysis profile (PAP) showed the presence of subpopulations with higher penicillin resistance in four of nine clinical pneumo...
متن کاملNasopharyngeal carriage of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae among children with acute respiratory tract infections in Thailand: a molecular epidemiological survey.
The prevalence of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae in Thailand has dramatically increased over the last decade. During a national survey, which was conducted from 1992 to 1994, 37.2% of the pneumococci isolated from the nasopharynges of children with acute respiratory tract infections were penicillin resistant (MIC, >/=0.1 microg/ml). In order to investigate the prevalence and clon...
متن کاملMeningitis due to mixed infection with penicillin-resistant and penicillin-susceptible strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is the major cause of bacterial meningitis. We report a case of meningitis due to a mixed infection with two distinct strains of S. pneumoniae: one penicillin-resistant strain of serotype 9V and one penicillin-susceptible strain of serotype 7. The two strains exhibited different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles.
